Marriage: No Child’s Play

Project: India and Malawi, 2016 — 2020

Provide youngsters, especially girls, with information and better access to services to make informed decisions about marriage.

About the programme

Although there is a good understanding of the diverse drivers of child marriage, the evidence and experience base on what works in these different situations is not as strong as we would like it to be. To remedy this, the Making the Most of What We Know (MMWWK) programme provides the More Than Brides Alliance with a learning vision on the topic of linkages between adolescent sexuality and child marriage.

To pilot a new way of growing the knowledge base and increasing implementation effectiveness by systematically tapping into implementation experience within and beyond the More than Brides Alliance and bringing it together with the available evidence from research, on the topic of the links between female adolescent sexuality and child marriage.

Fact:

Nearly 1 every 3 seconds a girl is married before the age of 18, that’s 12 million girls each year

Approximately 12 million girls aged 15–19 years and at least 777,000 girls under 15 years give birth each year in developing regions
