The Perfect Fit

Project: Indonesia, 2018 — 2023

Designing and distributing reusable menstrual pads in a rural area and educating men and women about sexual rights and menstrual health.

About the Perfect Fit programme

Six million girls in Indonesia who experienced their first period were not prepared, which could contribute to discrimination of women’s health and improper hygiene management. Additionally, misunderstanding about menstruation still occur among adult women both in urban and rural areas, resulting in gender-based violence in particular sexual rights.

Even though many women and girls are able to afford sanitary pads to maintain their menstruation, most of them use single-use pads which contain lots of chemicals and are not environmentally friendly. They are forced to use them because of limited access of options.

The Perfect Fit initiative offers reusable menstrual products and education about health and hygiene.

Fact:

Six million girls in Indonesia who experienced their first period were not prepared

Every day, 800 million people menstruate

About 500 million women don't have what they need to manage their periods

Impact of the programme

We aim to break the culture of silence by providing alternatives to menstrual products and knowledge on menstrual health and sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Perfect Fit wants to break the taboo and stigma around menstruation by providing an alternative menstrual product to women and girls that is affordable and sustainable. Perfect Fit enables women and girls to understand their natural menstruation process, empower them in daily activities and eventually achieve equality. Currently, the programme is developing a new menstrual product, which is menstrual underwear.

Furthermore, the programme aims to:

  • scale up the production and distribution of re-usable menstrual pads in Indonesia;
  • become an independent business with and improve the business model;
  • further build social marketing strategies to promote the product and inform on menstrual health and SRHR, with the ultimate aim to break taboo and stigma around this topic.

Approach of the Perfect Fit programme

The Perfect Fit initiative offers reusable menstrual products, made from fabrics that are comfortable, safe and eco-friendly. The programme also provides education about health and hygiene, body and sexual rights of women and girls in Indonesia. Currently, we have established two production hubs in the island of Flores of Indonesia and scaled up to urban areas such as Java, Bali and Sulawesi.

In our production hubs on the Island of Flores, Java, Bali and Sulawesi, we work with female local tailors consisting of housewives, women with disabilities, gender-based violence survivors and single mothers. And we work with about 60 menstrual health agents to distribute the knowledge and products.
